Makai Golf Course Events – Princeville – Kauai
If you are visiting the north shore of Kauai you might want to know about the Makai Golf Course events happening on a weekly basis. Several started prior to the pandemic shutdown of the island, but a couple of them are brand new. There is definitely something for everyone.
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I will admit right away that I’m not a golfer. I do know beauty though, and the 18 hole Makai Golf Course is in a spectacular setting. Perched on the cliffs of the Princeville Resort Community and just a couple of minutes from our vacation rental, Honu Point, this championship golf course will not disappoint. It was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1971 and redesigned in 2010. It ranks amongst the Top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses in America by Golf Digest, and within the Top 3 Best Courses You Can Play In Hawaii by GolfWeek. It has also been named to the list of America’s “Top 5 Great Golf Settings” in the world by National Geographic Traveler.
But, even if you do not play golf, there are other activities that might interest you. In April of 2019, I wrote a blog post about the popular Sunset Cart Tour and it is still going strong. Yesterday they had 50 people signed up to take the two and one half hour tour around a few holes of the Makai Golf Course in order to view the scenic sites, albatross chicks, and eventually the sunset over Makana Mountain (Bali Hai), or the ocean, depending on the time of year. At various stops the tour guide shares stories, legends, and interesting facts about the beautiful north shore of Kauai. If interested, check out the link and make your reservation with the Makai Golf Shop.
If you are ready for some Yoga to start your day, there is no better site than on the bluff overlooking the Pacfic Ocean where Tulasi Adeva, a well respected Yoga instructor, leads visitors and residents of ALL levels for their morning practice. The “studio” is located on the back of the Signature Hole 7 tee box. Check in at 7:25 AM with Tulasi at the Makai Golf Shop and drive your golf cart to one of the most beautiful vistas on the island. Practice is from 7:30 AM to 8:45 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Reservations are required.
One of the two new events at the Makai Golf Course, is the Music and Art Festival, started about a month ago, on every Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00. With the idea of growing, the event currently holds about 15 crafters and offers live music in a shaded setting next to the Makai Tennis Courts and Pro Shop in the heart of the Princeville Resort community. It is a relaxing way to spend an hour or so after a day at the beach or a round of golf. Buy a drink, pupu (appetizer), or sandwich at the Makai Grill, have a seat, and listen to some local music. Slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy.
The latest event to be offered by the Makai Golf Course is on Friday night. They call it Aloha Friday Live and it runs from 3:30 to 5:30 in the same area as the Music and Art Festival. Happy Hour specials are offered at the Makai Grill and local, live musicians perform.
The Makai Grill is on the back lanai of the Golf Shop. It is open for breakfast, lunch and happy hour seven days a week. They serve golfers and non-golfers alike. Offering made-to-order entrees loaded with locally sourced and organic ingredients, it is a great place to catch the ‘big game’ on their 70 inch HD TV.
So, there you have it. Whether you are looking for golf, scenic views, yoga, music, crafts, or good food, the Makai Golf Course has it all. Check them out whenever you find yourself lucky enough to be in Princeville, Kauai.
