Kauai Events – Anaina Hou

We, on the north shore, are incredibly grateful to Anaina Hou for providing a wide variety of Kauai events right in our own neighborhood. Just on the outskirts of Kilauea town, this community park has become quite the place to go for both residents and visitors alike.

Anaina Hou is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose vision is “to enrich the lives of our Kauai ohana and our visitors from around the world.” This property consists of 30 acres, including the Wai Koa Loop Trail. But, most of the activities are conveniently located just off the highway. This section of the property features the beautiful Porter Pavilion Complex, the Sunset Lanai, the mini golf with botanical gardens, the 17,000 sf children’s playground, and weekly farmers’ markets.

Porter Pavilion

The Porter Pavilion Complex is home to the bi-weekly Ahi Lele Fire Show. This exciting entertainment, full of hula and fire dance, may be enjoyed on either Monday or Wednesday night. Choose from going to the show only, or add a delicious buffet meal to the ticket. All ages are guaranteed to have an enjoyable time.

In addition to this weekly event, Anaina Hou has just announced a new show at the Porter Pavilion. This local experience is called Kanikapila and will be offered on Friday evenings. It is a family gathering of Hawaiian music and dance. Dinner is included.

But, what is really exciting, especially to residents, is that Anaina Hou brings in musical talent from other islands and the mainland. These concerts are very popular and vary in cost. Genres include Rock and Roll, Reggae, Jazz, Pop, Hawaiian, you name it. They often times sell out as soon as they are announced, and people come from all over the island to attend these special events. If you are visiting Kauai, be sure to see who might be performing while you are on island. For information about all of these Kauai events, go to the Anaina Hou Calendar of Events, or follow them on Facebook or Instagram.

Sunset Lanai

For a more relaxed, comfortable space, end your day of sightseeing or work under the big white tent next to the mini golf. Open Wednesday through Sunday, from 4:30 – 8:30, you may sip your favorite cocktail, eat a specialty pupu (appetizer), and listen to some local, live music. It is a perfect spot to meet up with friends or family and watch the sunset. For some friendly competition, join groups for Trivia Night, the first Friday of every month. And, if you are ready to kick up your heels, the line dancing crew is there for you on the first Wednesday of every month.

For a light meal, Silvercloud Eatery is on site offering brick oven pizzas and salads. You may also want to drop in on Saturday morning for breakfast after buying your produce at Anaina Hou’s Farmers Market.

Mini Golf

It would be hard to find a mini golf as lovely as the Anaina Hou course. The 18 holes are surrounded by a lush, Hawaiian botanical garden! Water hazards, pipe shots and other obstacles make for a fun and challenging game for all ages. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 to 4:00. Last check-in is at 3:00. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended.

Children’s Playground

One of the best playgrounds on the island, this 17,000 square foot haven for children will keep them occupied for quite awhile. There is lots of variety, and the structures illustrate some Hawaiian history, including sailing canoes and a sugarcane train. Glance through the personalized tile wall, and, if you feel moved to contribute, create your own tile with a family name, favorite quote, inspirational message, or tribute. Bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic next to the koa forest.

Farmers Market

Anaina Hou is a hot spot on Saturday mornings as residents and visitors flock to the grounds for some fresh produce and locally made products. Fruits, vegetables, eggs, honey, and many more Kauai offerings are available from more than 40 vendors. Line up early to get freshly baked bread and pastries from Midnight Bear out of Hanapepe. Buy a breakfast burrito and eat it at the picnic tables in front of the Porter Pavilion. Everything is fresh and much of it is organic. Open from 9:00 to 12:00, but items go fast so get there as early as you can!

Anaina Hou’s Mission Statement

Anaina Hou Community Park is a community-gathering place on Kauai’s north shore that is rooted in our diverse history and where we honor the culture of these islands that calls us to Malama (care for) the land & sea, ourselves, and each other. To this end, we dedicate ourselves to developing public and private partnerships that benefit our greater island community through education, health and public safety, environmental stewardship, and quality entertainment.

It is hard to remember what life was like before Anaina Hou. There was a lot of driving into Kapaa or Lihue for Kauai events. Now, north shore residents and visitors have a quick ride to musical performances, shows, and happy hour activities. Mahalo to the executive leadership who make it all happen!
