What To Do In Kauai – Surf And SUP Lessons – Hanalei
When you are wondering what to do in Kauai, how about trying surf or SUP lessons in Hanalei Bay!
The Hawaiian family at Hanalei Wave Riders take great pride in sharing the sport of He’e Nalu (surfing or sliding on a wave) with you. They offer private, small group and family surf instruction for all levels. Lessons start with instructors teaching technique and safety on the beach, then they’ll pick a sandy bottom spot in Hanalei Bay and go rip it up. All surfing lessons are two hours in length. Lessons are year-round adapting to daily conditions. Check out their video:
Surf lessons are available Monday through Saturday. Lesson starts 30 minutes after check in time. All instructors are certified in CPR, First Aid, & Advanced Lifesaving.

For a more serene experience, especially when the swells aren’t rolling in, how about trying Stand Up Paddleboarding (aka SUP). Stand Up Paddleboarding is a super fun way for all experience levels and ages to get out on the water. Hanalei Bay is a great beginner friendly beach for your first SUP lesson. Join the surf instructors at Hanalei Wave Riders for a safe, fun & unforgettable experience paddling around the bay, catching some waves, or going for a relaxing paddle up the tranquil Hanalei River.

Perhaps you don’t feel like you need a lesson and would prefer to just rent some equipment. Kayak Hanalei and Hanalei Wave Riders offer surfboards, Stand Up Paddleboards, and beach equipment for rent.
Surfboards:
They rent beginner friendly soft-top boards 365 days a year. All surfboard rentals include leashes, car racks, and loading/unloading service. No reservations required, just stop by the shop.

Kayak Hanalei and Hanalei Wave Riders are located in Hanalei, about an eight minute drive from Honu Point. They are in the green building just past the Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant (second building on the right as you enter Hanalei). Look for the surfboards and kayaks stacked in the yard.
Open everyday from 8:00 to 5:30, including most holidays.
