Where To Eat In Kauai – Village Snack and Bake Shop – Hanalei
Looking for a hole-in-the-wall, local hangout with great pastries, then head to the Village Snack and Bake Shop in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. I have to admit, I haven’t actually eaten a meal at the shop because it is just too close to home, but I have ordered and purchased their pies – many times!
The Village Snack and Bake Shop is located in the Ching Young Village Shopping Center in downtown Hanalei, just a ten minute drive from Honu Point. It is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. Don’t expect fine dining and great ambiance here, but if it is local food you want, this might be the place to pick up a plate lunch and head to Hanalei Bay. The reviews on both Trip Advisor and Yelp average 4 out of 5. People seem to love the chili pepper chicken plate.
Or the Combo Plate. $10.00 will get you either choice.
There are plenty of other lunch menu items, like deli or specialty sandwiches and burgers, also at reasonable prices.
For breakfast, try a loco moco plate, french toast, breakfast wraps, eggs, or tropical pancakes, all less than $10.00. But don’t forget to add a couple of malasadas to go with your meal.
I brought these home after buying the macadamia nut pie pictured at the top of the page. A malasada is a Portuguese confection, made of egg-sized balls of yeast dough that are deep-fried in oil and coated with granulated sugar. They are best when they are hot, but shortly thereafter works too. 75 cents a piece. Yum!
But what the Village Snack and Bake Shop is best known for is their pies. Choose from banana cream, coconut cream, apple, or my favorite, macadamia nut, for $15.00, or lilikoi chiffon and guava chiffon for $17.00 each. They don’t always have them ready for purchase so call and order yourself one (or two) to be picked up later in the day or the next day. Or, if you don’t think you need a whole pie, stop by and grab a slice of pie or a piece of haupia, another local favorite. The Village Snack and Bake Shop provides many pies for the restaurants on island.
Here is one of the mixed reviews from TripAdvisor which pretty much sums it up: Yummy baked goods and very tasty loco mocos with perfectly cooked eggs. We usually stop here for a hearty breakfast before hiking the Kalalau Trail or kayaking the Kalihiwai and Hanalei Rivers. No ambience – the place is located in a place as old as the time in Ching Young Village, but that doesn’t take away one bit from the solid food!
