Kauai Rum Safari Adventure

Visitors are not the only ones to have fun on Kauai! I had been wanting to go on the Kauai Rum Safari for a very long time. Social Media is full of raves about this unique experience. So, Tom and I decided that our wedding anniversary was the perfect excuse to check it out.

They call it a “rum-spiked adventure” and indeed it was. Because there had been rain showers off and on all day, the open-aired safari truck pulled up to the loading platform with a wood cover over the seats just in case the rain continued. Seventeen of us excitedly jumped on board with two humorous guides, and then headed off to explore the 105 acre Kilohana Plantation.

Much of the plantation is comprised of pastures, farming plots, and fruit orchards. As we worked our way to the orchards, Jack and Ass, two orphaned donkeys breyed for their treat. Goats and alpacas came running too, as our driver frisbeed corn tortillas their way.

Once at the orchards, where 45 rows are planted with different varities of exotic fruit trees, we stopped a couple of times to sample the harvest. Lychee, longan, cashew, mango, apple banana, and pineapple are just some of the interesting foods grown here for the restaurant and tour use.

Our Rum Safari continued on to the beautiful Kahuna Nui Valley where we exited our vehicle and strolled through a lush, tropical forest on a wooden boardwalk.

Tucked back at the end of the boardwalk was an open-aired gazebo. Here we enjoyed our first tasting of rum from the Koloa Rum Company store. This premium local rum is sold in stores on the island, throughout the state, and on the mainland. They also offer a Rum Tasting experience on the Plantation property itself. We had a sampling of four different varieties – white, dark, coconut, and my favorite, cacao (chocolate). While we learned a bit about the company from Tiny, our driver, Rick mixed up some delicious, fresh fruit mai tais for us to take with us on our journey.

Back on the Plantation, our drive took us to more pastures of anxious animals waiting for their treats. The highlight was when we entered one such pasture with over 70 wild pigs who came storming up to the truck. Lots of giggles and laughs were heard as little ones grabbed the thrown tortillas and barreled away from the others ready to steal the goods. A horse came right up to us begging for the limes on our drinks. And, a huge steer showed it’s tongue as Tiny gave him his own, personal tortilla. By now, the rum was putting everyone in a good mood.

Our final stop was in the taro fields at the Loi Lanai (taro porch). It was built above a reflecting pond. Once again, our entertaining hosts mixed up a rum cocktail; this time with the fruits of the season. It was yummy and sweet. Maui potato chips were also provided. With a little mingling, we discovered we were not the only residents enjoying the tour. A young couple, celebrating a birthday, was also having some local fun.

Farm to Glass Special of the Week

The two hour Kauai Rum Safari tour had flown by. Given the quantity of rum that was offered, some were feeling a bit buzzed, but definitely happy. Knowing ahead of time that we might be feeling this way, and not wanting to drive home right away, we made reservations at Gaylord’s restaurant at the Kilohana Plantation house. Others may have gone to the bar for some pupus (appetizers), or wandered through the tempting shops inside the house.

Historic Home

The Plantation home was built in 1935 and has an ambiience of the bygone era of sugarcane farming and production. We were seated out on a very large, covered lanai with a view of the grounds. Our dinner was absolutely delicious and a perfect way to end the evening.

Whether a resident or a visitor, I highly recommend the Kauai Rum Safari. Apparently I am not the only one as Tripadvisor travelers placed this attraction in the top 10% worldwide! It is two, thoroughly enjoyable hours you will not forget. Tours are daily at 11:00, 1:30, and 4:00. Cheers!
