Where To Eat In Kauai – Hanalei Bread Company – Kauai
Looking for where to eat breakfast or lunch in Kauai, try Hanalei Bread Company in the heart of Hanalei town. The bakers first started selling their pastries and breads out of the Baracuda Restaurant next door but when the opportunity arose to open their own place they took it. Now it’s a hot spot in Hanalei which sometimes leads to long lines at the counter. For most, the wait is worthwhile. A friend and I had lunch there recently and the sandwiches were delicious; turkey on a fresh baguette.
Other lunch items on the menu are: four different kinds of pizzetta and four other sandwiches, including a roasted vegetable medley, salami and ham, classic B.L.T and grilled cheese. There are also daily specials which are listed on a chalkboard to the side of the menu on the wall.
For breakfast you may savor some of the most delicious-looking, organic pastries available on the north shore or choose from a limited menu, including their famous breakfast burrito. Add a smoothie or coffee drink and you’re good to go for the day.
As you might expect, being the Hanalei Bread Company, they also bake bread. Pick out an organic loaf and take it back to your accommodations for toast or sandwiches the next day. Varieties include cranberry walnut sourdough, olive tortano, rosemary sourdough, rustic multi-grain sourdough and others. They also feature a Gluten Free loaf.
Hanalei Coffee Roasters, a premium coffee, is sold here as well.
In looking up the reviews, I have to say they are mixed. I’m guessing the less-than-perfect reviews are a result of the slow service during busy times. Still, their review average is 4 out of 5 stars. Here are a couple of 5 star reviews that stood out:
Tom H. — “Best pastries on the island. Delicious local coffee (and I’m a teaholic from birth), friendly staff, across the street from Ching Young Village, lots of locals and visitors, no one in a hurry or a bad mood, lots of toddlers chasing wandering Kauai chickens, in the middle of possibly the prettiest small town in the country :0)”
Anthony M. — “Me and my wife’s favorite place to eat for breakfast while staying in Princeville for our honeymoon. By the daily line and all the tables full every day we visited, it was probably everyone else’s favorite place as well.
Ate breakfast here all 5 days of our stay. I had the breakfast burrito mostly and strayed once to have the Brekkie Sandy special. Loved how the burrito was pressed and the tortilla given the perfect crisp. Wife also had the Frittata which was delish and changes from day to day on the special menu, but they do sell out of it if you arrive too late.
Had the best coffee of any of the places we tried in Hawaii and the cold brew was excellent.”
So, if you have time before your busy day starts, drive to Hanalei Bread Company and check out the goodies they have to offer. Hopefully they will not be too busy. Enjoy!
