A Morning Walk On Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii

I woke up to a gorgeous morning on Kauai with a walk on Hanalei Bay calling out to me. Just down the road from Princeville, I was slowed for a few minutes by the flag people stopping traffic on the hill where they are reinforcing the road. I found the first parking lot full at 8:00 but the second virtually empty. There were a handful of people on the sand and a few novice surfers waiting for the summer “surf” to arrive. Plenty of boats were anchored in the bay with kayaks and paddle boards floating by. The water was crystal clear. It was a pretty idyllic scene, so I thought I would share a few photos with you.

Now that the road from Hanalei to Ke’e is open, lots of people are either getting parking reservations or riding the shuttle to go to beaches that have been closed for 15 months. Hanalei Bay is back to “normal.” Visitors are spread out over the north shore and everyone is enjoying the space!

What makes Hanalei Bay so spectacular is that it is surrounded by lush mountains. After a rain shower the hills are full of waterfalls. So, gather up your beach chairs, umbrellas (if you like shade), cooler, and reef-safe sunscreen for a few hours in the most beautiful place on earth.

Directions to Hanalei Bay:

From our vacation rental, Honu Point, in Princeville, go to the main highway and turn right (away from the airport). Go down the hill and cross over this one lane bridge.

Turn right on Aku Road (Kalypso’s Restaurant is on the corner). The road will dead end at Weke Road. If you turn right you will see a parking lot and pavilion on your left. If there is a space available, park there. The lifeguard station is in front of the pavilion.

If there is not a space in this parking lot, turn around and head in the opposite direction along Weke Road. You will drive by expensive real estate on your right with hedges to block your view. At a small road, He’e, turn right. There is a large dirt parking lot there with a lifeguard tower. Further down Weke Road there is a very small parking lot and restrooms at Ama Ama Road. If there is not any space in these three parking lots, try to find a spot along Weke Road. There are several pedestrian access paths leading to the bay. Enjoy!
