Best Burger On Kauai – Street Burger – Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii
UPDATE: Street Burger has closed as of January 1, 2023.
If you are looking for an urban-chic eatery, offering handcrafted, locally-sourced burgers, hand-cut fries, and the Eastside’s largest selection of local and craft beers on tap, then Street Burger is just for you. It is not on the North Shore, but surely sometime during your vacation you will be heading to the south shore or the Waimea Canyon and a stop here for lunch or dinner should be listed in the itinerary.
We stopped recently for lunch after picking up our friends from the airport. This time I resisted the urge to have a burger and ordered their generous green salad with fries. But the rest of the group ordered burgers and this is what our table looked like when the food arrived.
There are so many unusual burger offerings it is hard to choose. They are made with 100% Kauai grass-fed beef (with the exception of the lamb, pork belly and veggie burger). There are classics, like the Bacon Blue Burger which is made with hardwood smoked bacon and Point Reyes blue cheese. But, more interesting and unusual are the twelve “Different” burgers. Try the Greek Burger which consists of olive tapenade, feta, cucumber, tzatziki and spinach. Or the Southern Burger with fried green tomato, pimento cheese, greens and buttermilk-chive dressing. Each burger is piled so high it is hard to get your mouth around it!
Delicious hand-cut fries come with the meal, but if you are craving something different try one of the six other choices of fries. Diavola Fries are topped with pickled peppers, sriracha aioli and sea salt. Texas Poutine Fries are a meal on their own with texas style chili, sharp cheddar cheese, poached egg and fizzled onion. And, of course, onion rings are always an option.
There are LOTS of beers on tap, cider, bubbles, and wine. It is a busy place at Happy Hour. The bar is up front and the chef and his assistants cook right in front of seating at the open grill. Table seating is inside as pictured below or on the outside lanai in back.
“The table should be more than a place to nourish oneself. It is a place to build relationships with family and friends; to encourage discussion.” Aaron Leikam (owner and chef)
Chef Aaron, owner and Chef of Oyster 369 & Street Burger, has been cooking for nearly 30 years, in a wide variety of kitchens and cuisines & has lived on Kauai for the last decade. While on the Garden Island, he was previously the Chef de Cuisine of 22 North, a farm to table restaurant in Lihue, as well as the Executive Chef of the Hukilau Lanai Restaurant.
I am not the only person who likes Street Burger. It can be crowded at peek hours! Check out these reviews on Yelp:
“Absolutely amazing burgers! Found out about this place from a local when I wanted to try a locally sourced beef burgers. Its not necessarily a place that you would find just by driving down the road so I hope that someone finds this gem by reading my review!
The decor is rustic and you can see them making your burgers on an open grill. The portions are large and every burger at our table was delicious but my fave was the frenchie! Who doesn’t love brie cheese? They have a great draft beer selection that went perfectly with the burgers.”

“Delicious gourmet burgers and trendy decor. This was the last restaurant my wife and I visited on the island due to multiple recommendations from friends who live on the island.
It’s difficult to impress me with a burger, but this place does just that at an price comparable to the mainland. For $16 I got a huge gourmet burger and large pile of fries.
My wife and I were impressed at how fast this place was for a sit-down restaurant. We were in a time crunch because our departure flight was rapidly approaching. Our waitress made a note of our situation and we were in and out within 30 minutes. We were lucky to beat the dinner rush.
We enjoyed sitting at a bar-like area watching the chefs cook. They take great care in their work and are very efficient. It was fun to see all the different dishes being prepared.
If you’re in the mood for a big juicy gourmet burger, look no further than Street Burger.”
